They are mollusks with a flattened body, covered on their dorsal side by eight articulated calcareous plates.

They have a very developed foot and have the gills located on the edge of the mantle.

In the mouth they have a radula with several rows of teeth.

The excretory apparatus is composed of two nephridia, which empty into the pallial groove of the mantle.

The sexes are separated and in their development they are born as larvae with a kind of veil, full of vibrating cilia.

They are marine and live firmly attached to the rocks with their feet.
The hinged plates allow them to roll into a ball.
They have small holes in the plates covered by hairs that are light-sensitive organs.
